Hydrotherapy History
Hydrotherapy dates back a long way when people from both the West and East discovered the therapeutic benefits with being in contact with water. During the Roman empire, soldiers would soak themselves in pools of water to accelerate the restoration of their bodies after a battle. Bath houses were built for the wealthy to enjoy but the breeding of germs and bacteria caused infectious diseases to spread. Only the royalties had the luxury of soaking in water in their homes, complemented with plants and herbs.
In the 1800s, a priest from Germany Sebastian Kneipp formalised Hydrotherapy after long periods of study. When he was a young adult, he was diagnosed with the tuberculosis, which then was incurable. Kneipp went in search of a cure for the disease and chanced upon a book on water and herbs. After practising what was taught in the book, he eventually managed to cure himself of tuberculosis. Encouraged, he started to educate the people on simply yet effective ways to treat ailments using water and herbs. Nobles also sought him to treat health ailments. Today, the Sebastian Kneipp Schule in Germany trains professional hydrotherapists.
