What are Negative Ions?
The ionizer found in the Ultrasonic Hydrotherapy Home Spa produces large amounts of negative ions.
Places where the largest proportion of negative ions can be found are in natural environments, such as in forests and by the oceans. At the Niagara Falls, negative ions are abundant at 100,000cm³. Negative ions are formed when they are separated in moving air or water.
Negative ions clean the air because they combine with positively charged particles in the air, including dust, smoke and germs, and falls to be removed from the breathing air zone. The presence of negative ions in nature is why we feel fresh and relaxed surrounded by very clean air. On the other hand, although positive ions are naturally found as well, a surplus of positive ions is released from electrical items such as television sets and computers. This excess causes us to feel fatigued.
According to Pierce J. Howard, PhD, (author of The Owners’ Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research) Director of research at the Centre for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C.), “Negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy.”

Studies on Ozone & Negative Ions
Dr. Walter Stark, 1971
Result: In 6 months, 22 sick days in total were lost by employees working in the first room with the negative ionizer turned on. In the second room with the non-operating ionizer, 64 days were lost due to sickness. There was a month-long flu epidemic, the first group lost a total of 3 days to sickness, while the second group lost a total of 40 days to sickness
Fred Soyka, Surrey University, 1991
Numerous other studies also show negative ions to relieve conditions including fatigue and respiratory illnesses.
- 44 employees of a Swiss textile mill were split equally into 2 60’ by 60’ rooms both with a negative ionizer, to work for 6 months.
- In the first room, a negative ion purifier was turned on, while in the second room, the people were told that they were in a room full of negative ions, although the negative ion purifier was turned off.

- Eight negative ion generators were put in the computer and data preparation section at the Norwich Union Insurance Group headquarters.
- A one month of pre-test period before the negative ions generators were placed compiled statistics for occurrences of sickness and headaches.

Physical effects of negative air ions in a wet sauna
Watanabe I, Noro H, Ohtsuka Y, Mano Y, Agishi Y., Int J Biometeorol. 1997 Apr;40(2):107-12.
Department of Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, Hokkaido University School of Medicine, Sapporo City, Japan.
The physical effects of negative air ions on humans were determined in an experimental sauna room equipped with an ionizer. Thirteen healthy persons took a wet sauna bath (dry bulb temperature 42 degrees C, relative humidity 100%, 10 min exposure) with or without negative air ions. The subjects were not told when they were being exposed to negative air ions. There were no differences in the moods of these persons or changes in their blood pressures between the two saunas. The surface temperatures of the foreheads, hands, and legs in the sauna with negative ions were significantly higher than those in the sauna without ions. The pulse rates and sweat produced in the sauna with ions were significantly higher than those in the sauna without ions. The results suggest that negative ions may amplify the effects on humans of the sauna.
